Phylum Arthropoda is large and incredibly diverse, including creatures from mosquitos to centipedes to lobsters. Crash Course has a summary of what distinguishes them: segmented body, jointed appendages, and an exoskeleton made of chitin, a polymer similar to cellulose.
On Thursday, we will walk to Birch Lake, just outside the school fence, to look for aquatic invertebrates. Students are encouraged to bring rubber boots if possible, but any footwear that can get a little wet or dirty will be fine. Some of the specimens we hope to find are pictured below. The video shows movement of mosquito larva and copepods from a bog in east Anchorage. Members of class Aves (birds) can be heard in the background.
Can we just eliminate all the mosquitoes? Yes, but we probably shouldn't. Here's why.
