During the next two weeks, Journalism students are analyzing political cartoons and presenting to the class. This should focus on critical thinking and interpreting symbolism.
Directions
1. Find a total of six political cartoons, three that are from within the last 12 months, and three that are over 20 years old.
2. Select three of the six, at least one recent and one old, to analyze and put into a presentation.
3. For each of the three cartoons, describe the cartoonist’s use of the persuasive techniques listed on the directions handout. The same information can be found here.
Questions to think about:
What issue is the cartoon about?
What is the cartoonist’s opinion of the issue?
What might a person with the opposite opinion think?
Did you find the cartoon persuasive?
4. Prepare a presentation with the cartoons and a summary of the techniques to present to the class. Do not put all your text into the slide. Use the slides to list your talking points. Make your presentation using PowerPoint, Googles Slides, Prezi, or a similar program.
5. Share your presentation with Mr Gumpert at [email protected]
Presentations are due on November 6, which is when we will begin presentations.
See the attached PDF for a model of the presentation.
