When electing the President of the United States, the US uses the Electoral College, rather than the popular vote. In this system, it is possible for a candidate to lose the popular vote but still win the election. More importantly, it creates a situation in which some residents have a more powerful vote than others. CGP Grey explains the problem in this video, along with a demonstration as to how a candidate can hypothetically win the presidency with just 22% of the popular vote.
